RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a substituição parcial da silagem de capim elefante por torta de babaçu (Orbignya speciosa) sobre o desempenho, consumo, digestibilidade, composição química e ganho em peso de carcaça de ovinos. Cinquenta e quatro machos, castrados (19,08±2,76kg) foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado e administrado um dos seguintes tratamentos: 0.0, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5 e 50% (%MS) de substituição da silagem pela torta de babaçu. Não houve diferença (P> 0.05) na ingestão de matéria seca, proteína bruta e fibra em detergente neutro, porém o consumo de extrato etéreo aumentou (P< 0.05). A digestibilidade da matéria seca, fibra em detergente neutro e nutrientes digestíveis totais não foram alterados, no entanto, os coeficientes de digestibilidade da proteína bruta reduziu (P< 0.05) e do extrato etéreo aumentou (P< 0.05), com a substituição. Não houve alterações no ganho de peso médio diário e ganho de peso em carcaça. Nas carcaças, observou-se aumento linear na proporção do extrato etéreo, no entanto a porcentagem de proteína bruta diminuiu. O aumento no extrato etéreo da carcaça mostrou uma tendência linear. A substituição da silagem pela torta de babaçu em até 50% não alterou o desempenho de ovinos, porém levou a aumento na deposição de gordura na carcaça.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the partial replacement of elephant grass silage with babassu (Orbignya speciosa) on the performance, intake, digestibility, and carcass weight gain of sheep. Fifty-four castrated male lambs (19.08±2.76kg) were distributed in a completely randomized design and administered one of the following treatments: 0.0, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5 or 50% dry matter (%DM) replacement of elephant grass silage with babassu cake. No difference (P> 0.05) was observed in the dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber intake, but the ether extract intake increased (P< 0.05). The digestibility of the dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, and total digestible nutrients were unaffected. The crude protein digestibility decreased (P< 0.05), and the ether extract digestibility increased with the replacement of the elephant grass. There were no changes in mean daily weight gain and carcass weight gain. In the carcasses, a linear increase was observed in the proportion of the ether extract, and the crude protein decreased. The replacement of the silage with the babassu cake by up to 50% did not change the performance of sheep, however it led to an increase in fat deposit in the carcass.

RESUMO Salmonella Gallinarum pode causar alta mortalidade em aves da ordem Galliformes. Objetivou-se neste estudo relacionar a presença de sinais clínicos com a recuperação de Salmonella Gallinarum de órgãos e swabs cloacais de codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix) experimentalmente infectadas. Um total de 70 codornas fêmeas foram alojadas em par por gaiola e divididas em dois grupos (IG: codornas inoculadas com 1,5x106 UFC de Salmonella Gallinarum Nalr / mL e CG: grupo controle). Após a inoculação, as aves foram avaliadas três vezes ao dia para se verificar a presença de sinais clínicos. As aves que se apresentaram com penas eriçadas, olhos fechados e permaneciam imóveis na gaiola foram removidas para a eutanásia, assim como o mesmo número de aves dos grupos inoculados que não apresentaram sinais clínicos e do grupo controle. O swab cloacal foi realizado após a eutanásia para a amostragem de fígado, baço, ceco, folículos ovarianos e pulmão para procedimento microbiológico. As codornas com sinais clínicos e as encontradas mortas apresentaram positividade de 100%, enquanto as codornas inoculadas sem sinais clínicos apresentaram menor positividade (38,5%). Portanto, codornas com septicemia causada por SG apresentam sinais clínicos da doença e o patógeno pode ser isolado e quantificado em diversos órgãos.

ABSTRACT Salmonella Gallinarum is capable of causing high mortality in birds of the order Galliformes. This study aimed to relate the presence of clinical signs with the recovery of Salmonella Gallinarum from organs and c loacal swabs of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix) experimentally infected. A total of 70 female quails were housed in a pair per cage and divided in two groups (IG: quails inoculated with 1.5x106 CFU of Salmonella Gallinarum Nalr/mL and CG: control group). After the inoculation, birds were evaluated three times a day to verify the presence of clinical signs. Birds that presented ruffled feathers, eyes closed and remained quiet in the cage were removed for euthanasia, as well as the same number of birds from the inoculated groups that presented no clinical signs and from the control group. Cloacal swabbing was performed following euthanasia for the sampling of liver, spleen, caeca, ovarian follicles and lung for microbiological procedure. Quails with clinical signs and quails found dead presented positivity of 100%. While inoculated quails with no clinical signs presented a lower positivity (38.5%). Therefore, quails with septicemia caused by SG present clinical signs of the disease and the pathogen can be isolated and quantified in the organs.

RESUMO Realizou-se estudo retrospectivo de laudos hematológicos de nove cães detectados com infecção por Hepatozoon canis, por meio de exame microscópico de esfregaços sanguíneos, em um laboratório no município de Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. Este estudo objetivou avaliar o perfil hematológico dos cães infectados, além da ocorrência de coinfecções com outros agentes que infectam células sanguíneas, tendo em vista que estudos a respeito da hepatozoonose canina no Brasil são escassos e que existem algumas divergências a respeito da infecção por H. canis que ainda requerem esclarecimento. Os nove casos de infecção por H. canis foram identificados dentre todos os cães examinados no laboratório estudado, em 2009 e 2010, com uma ocorrência de 7/1.192 (0,59%; IC 95% 0,15 - 1,02%) cães positivos no primeiro ano e de 2/1.313 (0,15%; IC 95% 0,02 - 0,55%) em 2010. A análise dos laudos hematológicos dos nove cães evidenciou a ocorrência de coinfecção entre H. canis e outros agentes em dois (2/9; 22,22%; IC 95% 2,81 - 60,00%) desses cães, um deles com E. canis e outro com Babesia spp. (1/9; 11,11%; IC 95% 0,28 - 48,24%). Apenas o exame sanguíneo de um cão não evidenciou alterações, com base nos valores de referência. Anemia foi a alteração hematológica mais frequentemente observada (6/9; 66,67%; IC 95% 29,93 - 92,51%). Embora a ocorrência de infecções por H. canis neste estudo tenha sido baixa, alterações hematológicas significativas foram observadas na maioria dos cães infectados. Coinfecções com Babesia spp. e E. canis foram observadas em dois cães, não sendo possível atribuir exclusivamente a H. canis as alterações hematológicas detectadas nesses animais. Estudos longitudinais seriam fundamentais para determinar a causalidade dessas alterações. Os resultados ressaltam a importância de realizar diagnóstico diferencial em cães quando há suspeita clínica de infecção por hemoparasitas, uma vez que as alterações hematológicas em cães infectados por H. canis são bastante variáveis.

ABSTRACT A retrospective review of hematological reports of nine dogs detected with Hepatozoon canis infection by microscopic examination of blood smears in a laboratory in the municipality of Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil was conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the hematological profile of these infected dogs, in addition to the occurrence of coinfections with other agents that infect blood cells, since studies concerning canine hepatozoonosis in Brazil are scarce and there are some divergences regarding H. canis infection that still require a resolution. The nine cases of H. canis infection were identified among all dogs examined at the studied laboratory in 2009 and 2010, with an occurrence of 7/1,192 (0.59%; 95% CI 0.15 - 1.02%) positive dogs in the first year and 2/1,313 (0.15%; 95% CI 0.02 - 0.55%) cases in 2010. The analysis of the hematological reports showed an occurrence of coinfection between H. canis and other agents in two (2/9; 22.22%; 95% CI 2.81 - 60.00%) dogs, one with E. canis and another with Babesia spp. (1/9; 11.11%; 95% CI 0.28 - 48.24%). Only the blood test of one dog had no alterations, based on reference values. Anemia was the most frequent hematological alteration (6/9; 66.67%; 95% CI 29.93 - 92.51%). Although the occurrence of H. canis infection was low, significative hematological alterations were observed in most infected dogs. Coinfection with Babesia spp. and E. canis was detected in two dogs and the hematological alterations cannot be attributed exclusively to H. canis in these animals. Longitudinal studies would be of fundamental importance to determine the causality of these alterations. These results highlight the importance of differential diagnosis in dogs when there is clinical suspicion of infection by hemoparasites, since the hematological changes in dogs infected by H. canis are quite variable.

O presente trabalho relata o isolamento de Salmonella enterica em órgãos de um pombo doméstico de vida livre. No exame clínico foi observada a presença de fezes pericloacal na região ventral, caquexia, incoordenação motora e opistótono. Antes de iniciar um protocolo terapêutico, a ave foi a óbito, e, em seguida, foi realizada uma necropsia para remoção do baço, fígado, rim e intestino para exame bacteriológico e teste de sensibilidade a antibióticos. Foi isolado Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica (O:4,5:i-) e Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica sorovar Typhimurium do fígado e intestino, e o teste de sensibilidade demonstrou que essas cepas são sensíveis a vários antimicrobianos.

The present study reports the isolation of Salmonellaenterica in organs of free-living domestic pigeons. In the clinic examination, the presence of feces in the peri-cloacal and abdominal regions were observed, as well as symptoms such as cachexy, incoordination and opisthotonos. Before any therapeutic protocol was applied the bird died and a necropsy was then performed for the removal of spleen, liver, kidney and intestine for bacteriological examination and antibiotic sensitivity test. Salmonella enterica subsp.enterica (O:4,5:i-) and Salmonellaenterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium were isolated from the liver and intestine and the sensitivity test demonstrated that these strains are sensitive to several antibiotics.

A manutenção de aves em cativeiro reúne condições que favorecem a disseminação de doenças infecciosas, sendo a Salmonella uma dessas doenças infecciosas que acomete os psitacídeos. Portanto o objetivo do presente estudo foi isolar e identificar Salmonella spp. em Psittaciformes mantidos em criatórios comerciais e conservacionistas da Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza. Para o estudo, foram coletados swabs cloacais de 182 psitacídeos clinicamente sadios. Os resultados mostraram que três psitacídeos avaliados (1,65%) foram positivos: Amazona aestiva (Salmonella Lexington), Ara chloroptera (Salmonella Saintpaul) e Melopsittacus undulatus (Salmonella Newport). De acordo com a literatura científica, não há registro desses sorotipos em psitacídeos. Esta pesquisa evidenciou uma baixa prevalência de Salmonella spp. em Psittaciformes mantidos em criatórios comerciais e conservacionistas da Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza.

This study showed a low prevalence of Salmonellaspp. in captive psittacines from zoos and a commercial establishment of Fortaleza. None of the isolated serotypes (S. Lexington, S. Saintpaul and S. Newport) have yet been reported in Amazona aestiva, Ara chloropteraor Melopsittacus undulatus. However, the fact that most birds presented negative for Salmonellaspp. may not imply the absence of this pathogen in these birds, since the intermittent excretion is a well-known characteristic of this microorganism.

Immobilization, used in clinical practice to treat traumatologic problems, causes changes in muscle, but it is not known whether changes also occur in nerves. We investigated the effects of immobilization on excitability and compound action potential (CAP) and the ultrastructure of the rat sciatic nerve. Fourteen days after immobilization of the right leg of adult male Wistar rats (n=34), animals were killed and the right sciatic nerve was dissected and mounted in a moist chamber. Nerves were stimulated at a baseline frequency of 0.2 Hz and tested for 2 min at 20, 50, and 100 Hz. Immobilization altered nerve excitability. Rheobase and chronaxy changed from 3.13±0.05 V and 52.31±1.95 µs (control group, n=13) to 2.84±0.06 V and 59.71±2.79 µs (immobilized group, n=15), respectively. Immobilization altered the amplitude of CAP waves and decreased the conduction velocity of the first CAP wave (from 93.63±7.49 to 79.14±5.59 m/s) but not of the second wave. Transmission electron microscopy showed fragmentation of the myelin sheath of the sciatic nerve of immobilized limbs and degeneration of the axon. In conclusion, we demonstrated that long-lasting leg immobilization can induce alterations in nerve function.

The aim of this study is to know the concept of health professionals of an obstetric unit in the southern region of Brazil about humanized childbirth of adolescents. It is a descriptive and explanatory study with qualitative approach which is linked to multicentric research called "Childbirth Humanized Care in Adolescents" developed in the obstetric unit of a college hospital in the south of Brazil. The subjects of this study were ten health workers of the obstetric unit of the mentioned institution. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews, from November 01st, 2008 to October 31st, 2009. For this research cut it was used the question 17. Two themes were highlighted as result of analysis and organization of the findings in the subjects interviewed: ambience as care space and light technologies as tools for humanization of attention in parturient adolescent. The investigation has indicated that the humanizing attention to adolescents needs more than problem solving or use of hard technologies, it requires attitudes and behaviors of health workers who contribute for the strengthening of the link among professionals, users, family and community.

Este estudo tem como objetivo conhecer a concepção dos profissionais de saúde de um centro obstétrico do sul do Brasil sobre o parto humanizado de adolescentes. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e exploratório com abordagem qualitativa, estando vinculado à pesquisa multicéntrica intitulada "Atenção Humanizada ao Parto de Adolescentes", desenvolvida no centro obstétrico de um hospital de ensino do sul do Brasil. Os sujeitos do estudo foram dez trabalhadores da saúde efetivos do centro obstétrico da referida instituição. Os dados foram coletados a partir de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, entre 01 de novembro de 2008 a 31 outubro de 2009. Para este recorte da pesquisa utilizou-se especificamente a questão 17. Como resultado da análise e organização dos achados nos depoimentos dos sujeitos foram destacadas duas temáticas: a ambiência como espaço de cuidado e as tecnologias leves como ferramentas para a humanização da atenção à parturiente adolescente. A investigação apontou que a atenção humanizada ao parto de adolescentes necessita mais do que resolução de problemas ou uso de tecnologias duras e leve-duras, exige atitudes e comportamentos dos trabalhadores da saúde que contribuam para o fortalecimento do vínculo entre profissionais, usuárias, família e comunidade.

Se trata de un estudio descriptivo y exploratorio con abordaje cualitativo, estando vinculado a la investigación multicéntrica llamada "Atención Humanizada al Parto de adolescentes" desarrollada en el centro obstétrico de un hospital de enseñanza del sur del Brasil. Los sujetos del estudio fueron diez trabajadores de la salud efectivos del centro obstétrico de la referida institución. Los datos fueron colectados a partir de entrevistas semiestructuradas, entre 01 de noviembre de 2008 a 31 de octubre de 2009. Para este recorte de la investigación se utilizó específicamente la pregunta 17 Como resultado del análisis y organización de las respuestas en las entrevistas de los sujetos se destacaron dos temáticas: el ambiente como espacio de cuidado y las tecnologías leves como herramientas para la humanización de la atención a la parturiente adolescente. La investigación destacó que la atención humanizada al parto de adolescentes necesita más que resolución de problemas o uso de tecnologías duras y leves-duras; exige actitudes y comportamientos de los trabajadores de la salud para que contribuyan al fortalecimiento del vínculo entre profesionales, usuarias, familia y comunidad.

In this study, we analyze the influence of the concepts of death and dying of the nursing staff on the practice of care given in some areas of hospitalization. The data was produced by from a questionnaire containing open ended questions. The subjects of the investigation nurses, technicians and nurses' auxiliaries who act in the sectors of the medical clinic, the center of intensive care and emergency in public hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After the analysis of the data, two categories emerged: the INFLUENCE and CONFLICT of the concepts about death in the CHOICE and DYNAMICS of ethos of care and death: BEGINNING a new life and END of everything. The results point that the concepts of do not change among the nursing professionals who work in the units studied, and also it seems not to have influenced them when they chose their ethos of care giving. It draws attention that professionals in these units relate a conflict when thinking of death and facing it in their daily care.

Neste estudo, analisamos a influência dos conceitos de morte e morrer da equipe de Enfermagem sobre as práticas de cuidar em alguns espaços de internação hospitalar. Os dados foram produzidos a partir da aplicação de um formulário contendo perguntas abertas, sendo os sujeitos da pesquisa, Enfermeiros, Técnicos e Auxiliares de Enfermagem que atuam nos setores de Clínica Médica, Unidade de Terapia Intensiva e Emergência de hospitais da rede pública localizados no município do Rio de Janeiro. Após a análise dos dados, emergiram duas categorias: A INFLUÊNCIA e o CONFLITO dos conceitos acerca da morte na ESCOLHA e na DINAMICA do ethos do cuidado; e Morte: INICIO de uma nova vida e FIM de tudo. Os resultados apontam que os conceitos de morte não se alteram entre os profissionais de enfermagem que atuam nessas unidades pesquisadas e também parece não ter os influenciado quando escolheram os seus ethos para cuidar. Chama atenção que os profissionais entrevistados relataram conflito no pensar a morte, e de encará-la em seu cotidiano de cuidar.

En este estudio analizamos la influencia de los conceptos de muerte y morir del equipo de Enfermería sobre las prácticas de cuidados en algunos espacios de internación hospitalaria. Los datos se produjeron a partir de la aplicación de un formulario conteniendo preguntas abiertas, siendo los sujetos de la investigación Enfermeros, Técnicos y Auxiliares de Enfermería que actúan en los sectores de Clínica Médica, Unidad de Terapia Intensiva y Emergencia de hospitales de la red pública localizados en el municipio de Rio de Janeiro. Después del análisis de los datos, emergieron dos categorías: la INFLUENCIA y el CONFLICTO de los conceptos acerca de la muerte en la ELECCIÓN y en la DINÁMICA de del ethos del cuidado, y Muerte: INICIO de una nueva vida y FIN de todo. Los resultados apuntan que los conceptos de muerte no se alteran entre los profesionales de enfermería que actúan en esas unidades investigadas y también parece no haberles influenciado cuando eligieron sus ethos para cuidar. Llama la atención que los profesionales entrevistados relataron conflicto en el pensar la muerte y en encararla en su cotidianidad de cuidar.

Porcine pituitary follicle stimulating hormone (pFSH) is known to regulate the production of growth factors that have an essential role in early foliculogenesis. However, the effects of different preparations of pFSH on the survival and development of caprine follicles are not yet known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different pFSH (Stimufol® and Folltropin®) on the in vitro survival and growth of caprine preantral follicles. Pieces of caprine ovarian tissues were cultured for either one or seven days in a supplemented Minimum Essential Medium, alone or containing either Stimufol® (50 ng/mL) or Folltropin® (10, 50, 100 and 1000 ng/mL). Fresh control ovarian tissues as well as cultured tissued were processed for histological and ultrastructural studies. The results showed that after seven days, only Stimufol® maintained follicular morphology similar to control. Moreover, follicular degeneration was higher in medium alone or with Folltropin® at 50, 100 and 1000 ng/mL. However, at day seven, the percentage of growing follicles was higher in 100 ng/mL of Folltropin® than Stimufol®. In conclusion, FSH preparations affect differently the performance of in vitro culture of caprine preantral follicles. Stimufol® was better to preserve follicular morphology while Folltropin® was more efficient to promote follicular growth.

This investigation is a descriptive explorative study that analyses the use of interactive multimedia (IM) as a pedagogic resource in Semiology and the application in nursing education. Its objective is to discuss the relation of the use of the IM in the course of Semiology and its application in the practical training of the course Nursing Semiotechnique II. The methodology was qualitative. We began with an analysis to get to know the profile of the interviewees, 25 Nursing students and then an analysis of the content of the discussion categories of the speeches. The results were divided into five categories: The contribution of the IM in the assimilation of the theoretical content of Nursing Semiology; IM, the correlation of the theory with the practice of Semiology in the improvement of Nursing care; the interaction proceeding from the visualization of the theoretical content of Semiology by means of interactive multimedia; the distance between the theoretical content of Semiology and its application in teaching/learning in Nursing, and the inaccessibility of the Nursing student to the new education technologies as a barrier to the teaching/learning process. From these categories the ideas were divided into: The interactive multimedia contributing to the correlation of the theoretician-practical education of Nursing Semiology and Semiothecnic II.

Trata-se de uma investigação descritivo-exploratória que analisa o emprego da multimídia interativa - MI, como recurso pedagógico em Semiologia e sua aplicabilidade no ensino teórico-prático de Enfermagem. Apresenta como objetivo discutir a relação entre o emprego da MI na disciplina de Semiologia e sua aplicabilidade no ensino prático de Semiotécnica de Enfermagem II. A metodologia foi qualitativa, com análise para traçar o perfil dos sujeitos, 25 graduandos de enfermagem, com base em variáveis pré-determinadas e, posteriormente análise de conteúdo, a partir da categorização dos discursos coletados. Os resultados permitiram a emergência de cinco categorias. A partir destas categorias foi possível o nucleamento de idéias: a multimídia interativa contribuindo na correlação do ensino teórico-prático de Semiologia e Semiotécnica de Enfermagem II.

Esta investigación es un estudio exploratorio descriptivo que analiza el uso de las multimedias interactivas - MI, como recurso pedagógico en Semiología y su aplicabilidad en la enseñanza de la enfermería. Presenta como objetivo discutir la relación entre el empleo de la MI en la asignatura de Semiología y su aplicabilidad en la enseñanza práctica en la asignatura de Semiotécnica en Enfermería II. La metodología fue cualitativa, con análisis para trazar el perfil de los entrevistados, 25 estudiantes de enfermería y posteriormente análisis del contenido, a partir de las categorización de los discursos recolectados. Los resultados fueran divididos en cinco categorías: la contribución de el MI en la asimilación del contenido teórico de Semiología en enfermería; MI, la correlación de la teoría con la práctica de la semiología en la mejora del cuidado de enfermería; la interactividad que procede de la visualización del contenido teórico de la semiología por medio de las multimedias interactivas; la distancia entre el contenido teórico de la semiología y su uso en la enseñanza-aprendizaje de la enfermería y la inaccesibilidad del estudiante de enfermería a las nuevas tecnologías de la educación como barrera del proceso enseñar-aprender. A partir de estas categorías las ideas fueron agrupadas en: las multimedias interactivas que contribuyen en la correlación de la enseñanza teórico-práctica dela Semiología y Semiotecnica en Enfermería II.

RESUMO Os autores deste trabalho relatam um caso de Leucose Enzoótica Bovina em uma fêmea de 3 anos de idade, atendida no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade de Brasília. O referido animal apresentou achados clínicos característicos da enfermidade como exoftalmia, paresia dos membros posteriores, aumento de linfonodos superficiais e massa endurecida palpável localizada no corno uterino esquerdo. À necropsia foram observadas massas esbranquiçadas, firmes e/ou macias, com formações nodulares ou difusas nos diferentes órgãos como coração, rúmen, útero, pulmão, medula, rins e tecido retro bulbar do globo ocular direito. O hemograma revelou leucocitose com pleomorfismo, citoplasma vacuolizado e presença de plasmócitos flamejantes e já no exame químico do líqüor evidenciou-se uma redução da glicemia. Os achados clínicos associados aos achados de necropsia e resultados laboratoriais contribuíram para se chegar a uma suspeita de Leucose Enzoótica Bovina.

ABSTRACT This paper reports a case of enzootic bovine leukosis in a 3-year-old cowtreatedat the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Brasília. This animal presented characteristic clinical findings of the disease like exophthalmia, paresia of the hind legs, growth of superficial lymph nodes, and a hard palpable mass localized inside the left uterine horn. At the necropsy there were observed white masses of hard or soft consistencies with nodular or diffused formation invarious organs like the heart, rumen, uterus, lungs, medulla, kidneys and retro-bulbar tissue behind the right eye. The hematological exam showed leukocytosis with pleomorfism, vacuolated cytoplasm, and the presence of flamejant plasmocytes. The chemical examination of the liquor revealed reduction of the glycemic level. The clinical finding associated with the necropsy findings and laboratorial results contributed to a suspicion of enzootic bovine leukosis.

Estudou-se a infiltração (em diferentes condições) do vidro de lantânio em alumina parcialmente sinterizada e a sua relação com a resistência à flexão. As barras de In-Ceram Alumina, fraturadas em flexão por 3 pontos, foram lixadas, polidas e caracterizadas por microscopias ótica e eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Foram usadas 10 barras para cada condição operacional. Resultados: (a) A MEV confirma que os núcleos de barras In-Ceram Alumina (sinterizados a 1120ºC durante 2h) infiltrados a 1100ºC durante 6h contém menos vidro de lantânio do que aqueles das barras infiltradas durante 6h a 1110ºC; (b) A micrografia ótica confirma que os núcleos de barras In-Ceram Alumina (sinterizada a 1120ºC durante 2h) infiltrada durante 6h (ou 2h) nas temperaturas de 1100ºC, 1100ºC, 1120ºC e 1130ºC não se diferem notavelmente; (c) A MEV mostra que a microestrutura interna de barras In-Ceram Alumina infiltradas com vidro de lantânio a 1120ºC e 1130ºC é complexa.

The infiltration of partially sintered alumina (under different conditions) by lanthanum alumino-silicate glass and its relation to the three-point flexural strength were studied. The In-Ceram alumina bars, fractured by flexural test, were ground by sand-paper, polished, and characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A total of 10 bars have been used for each operational condition. Results: a) SEM confirmed that the inner region of the In-Ceram® alumina bars (sintered at 1120ºC for 2h) infiltrated at 1100ºC during 6h contain less lanthanum glass than that of alumina bar infiltrated by glass at 1110ºC for 6h; (b) The optical micrography confirmed that the cores of the In-Ceram® Alumina bars (sintered at 1120ºC for 2h) infiltrated during 6h (or 2h) at temperatures of 1100ºC, 1100ºC, 1120ºC and 1130ºC do not differ significantly each other; (c) The SEM showed that the internal microstructure of the In-Ceram® Alumina bars infiltrated with lanthanum glass at 1120ºC and 1130ºC is complex.

RESUMO Diversos inquéritos soroepidemiológicos a respeito da toxoplasmose e leptospirose em suínos foram realizados em diferentes estados brasileiros, demonstrando a importância destas enfermidades para a suinocultura, bem como o potencial da espécie suína como fonte de infecção destas enfermidades para o homem. Este trabalho objetivou estabelecer as ocorrências de anticorpos anti-Toxoplasma gondii e anti-Leptospira spp. em suínos abatidos em três abatedouros, situados nos Estados de Minas Gerais e São Paulo. Foram colhidas 262 amostras de sangue de suínos terminados, provenientes de 16 municípios. Os soros foram submetidos ao método de Aglutinação Direta Modificada (MAD) para pesquisa de anticorpos anti-T. gondii, e à Soroaglutinação Microscópica (SAM), para anticorpos anti-Leptospira spp. Nenhuma amostra foi positiva para T. gondii e duas amostras reagiram para Leptospira interrogans, sorovar Pyrogenes (título 100). Os resultados devem ser em função do emprego do sistema de confinamento total, aliado ao manejo higiênico-sanitário na atividade suinícola e pelo pequeno período de permanência dos animais terminados nas granjas.

ABSTRACT Many seroepidemiological inquiries of toxoplasmosis and leptospirosis in swine have been realized in many Brazilian states, demonstrating the importance of these diseases for swine farming, as well as the potential of this swine species as a source of infection of these diseases for man. This study aimed to establish the occurrence of antibodies anti-Toxoplasma gondii and anti-Leptospira spp. in swine slaughtered in 3 slaughterhouses, located in Minas Gerais and São Paulo states, Brazil. Two hundred sixty-two blood samples were collected from slaughtered swine, from 16 cities, and the sera samples were submitted to the modified agglutination test, to investigate antiT. gondii antibodies, and to the microscopic agglutination test, to investigate anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies. No sample was positive for T. gondii, and 2 samples reacted to Leptospira interrogans, serovar Pyrogenes (titer 100). These low occurrences of antibodies in the studied swine, for the Leptospiratest, could be due the use of the system of total confinement, allied to the hygienic-sanitary swine management and the slaughtered animals’ short length of stay at the farms.

Pancreatic ß cell function and insulin sensitivity, analyzed by the homeostasis model assessment, before and after 24 weeks of insulin therapy were studied and correlated with the presence of autoantibodies against ß cells (islet cell and anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies), in a group of 18 Brazilian lean adult non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients with oral hypoglycemic agent failure (OHAF). Median fasting plasma glucose before and after insulin treatment was 19.1 and 8.5 mmol/l, respectively (P < 0.001); median HbA1c was 11.7% before vs 7.2% after insulin treatment (P < 0.001). Forty-four percent of the patients were positive (Ab+) to at least one autoantibody. Fasting C-peptide levels were lower in Ab+ than Ab- patients, both before (Ab+: 0.16 ± 0.09 vs Ab-: 0.41 ± 0.35 nmol/l, P < 0.003) and after insulin treatment (Ab+: 0.22 ± 0.13 vs Ab-: 0.44 ± 0.24 nmol/l, P < 0.03). Improvement of Hß was seen in Ab- (median before: 7.3 vs after insulin therapy: 33.4%, P = 0.003) but not in Ab+ patients (median before: 6.6 vs after insulin therapy: 20.9%). These results show that the OHAF observed in the 18 NIDDM patients studied was due mainly to two major causes: autoantibodies and ß cell desensitization. Autoantibodies against ß cells could account for 44% of OHAF, but Ab- patients may still present ß cell function recovery, mainly after a period of ß cell rest with insulin therapy. However, the effects of ß cell function recovery on the restoration of the response to oral hypoglycemic agents need to be determined.
